Even though we brush every day, many of us aren’t using the correct technique to truly protect our teeth and gums. At Dr. Aditya Dental Kraft in Crossing Republik, we believe that preventive care starts at home.
The Recommended Brushing Technique
To get the most out of your routine, dentists recommend the modified Bass technique
The 45-Degree Angle: Hold your soft-bristled toothbrush at a 45-degree angle toward your gum line. This is crucial for sweeping away plaque where it often starts—at the margin between your teeth and gums.
Gentle Circles, Not Scrubbing: Use small, gentle circular motions and short back-and-forth strokes. Avoid aggressive scrubbing, which can lead to gum recession and enamel wear.
Clean Every Surface: Brush the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of all your teeth. For the inside of your front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and use several up-and-down strokes.
Don't Forget Your Tongue: Your tongue can hold up to 60% of the bacteria in your mouth. Gently brush it or use a tongue scraper daily to freshen your breath and remove bacteria
Essential Brushing Habits for Success
The 2-2-2 Rule: Brush twice a day for two minutes each time, and visit us twice a year for professional cleanings.
Soft Bristles Only: Always use a soft-bristled brush. Hard bristles are too abrasive for your enamel and gums.
Replace Regularly: Get a new toothbrush every 3–4 months or immediately after you've been sick.
Wait After Eating: If you’ve consumed acidic foods or drinks (like citrus or soda), wait about 30 minutes before brushing to avoid damaging 'softened' enamel.
Spit, Don't Rinse: After brushing, spit out the excess toothpaste but avoid rinsing with water immediately. This allows the fluoride to stay on your teeth longer for better protection.
